Buying a Baby Crib? Read this first

Preparing a nursery for your new baby involves many decisions. One of these important decisions is choosing a crib. In today’s baby furniture market, you have many choices when it comes to the style, size, and price of a crib. Here are some things to consider while you are shopping for that perfect crib.

The first step to crib shopping is establishing the amount of money you are willing to spend. You can purchase a used crib for less than a hundred dollars, but remember that there will be no warranties. If you have time to watch the sales, you may be able to buy a new crib with warranties for less than a hundred bucks. If not, be prepared to pay anywhere from a hundred to several hundred dollars for the crib you choose.

The style of crib that you like may change from day to day as you explore the baby crib market. There are many shapes and sizes to choose from, so be sure to measure the nursery before shopping. Styles include traditional rectangle Cribs, Round Cribs, and Lifetime Cribs that will change to accommodate your child into adulthood. Also, each model of crib will come with different options. So, be sure to ask about drop-down sides, mattress height adjustments, and if the crib will change into a toddler bed.

The label on the crib you choose should let you know if the product contains formaldehyde or not. If it does not specify this, take the time to find out if it contains this harmful chemical. Avoid products made with composite wood or raw medium density fiberboard. Bringing items into your home made with formaldehyde will contaminate the air in your home and can cause allergies, asthma, or cancer in your family. So, take the time and be informed about the crib’s manufactured materials.

It might start out looking like a daunting task, but shopping for a crib can be great fun if you prepare. Set down ahead of time and write down your preferences, budget, and measurements. When you get to the store, don’t shop alone, find a sales person. They will be able to answer any questions you may have, so don’t be afraid to ask. Your efforts will be worth it when you look at your new baby safely sleeping in a beautiful, stylish crib.
